I recently spotted this article in the
Shropshire Star (Saturday April 12th 2008)
16,000 at Hawkstone Scramble
A crowd of nearly 16,000 motorcycling
enthusiasts saw the national scramble at Hawkstone Park on Saturday.
Racing conditions were perfect, and there were no serious accidents.
Roy King (Cheltenham) won the Hawkstone championship race, followed
by Dennis Bickerton (Cheadle) and Arthur Lampkin (Keighley).
Riding a 500cc Greeves machine, King led from the start (writes a
"Journal" reporter) with Tony White (London) challenging
for the first two laps, when Dennis Bickerton, riding a B.S.A. 500cc
took over in second place.
Arthur Lampkin kept a good lap average and finished third. King, who
clocked a time of 20 mins, 43 secs increased his lead with nearly
every lap, and when the famous Geoff Duke "flagged him in"
for the finish he was a clear 75 yards ahead of Bickerton.
Geoff Duke presented the championship trophy to Roy King and
congratulated local rider Dave Taylor, of Clive, who qualified for
the championship final on his Ariel 500.
There were 81 competitors for the events in all. The scramble was
promoted by the Salop Motor Club and sponsored by the Daily Herald. This
write up appeared in the Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News,
